IFTA, quick answers
The basics owner-operators ask every quarter.
When is IFTA due?
Quarterly — April 30, July 31, October 31, January 31. The Q2 2026 return (April–June) is due July 31, 2026.
How is IFTA tax calculated?
Total your miles and gallons everywhere to get fleet MPG. For each state: taxable gallons = miles there ÷ MPG; net taxable = taxable − gallons bought there; tax = net taxable × that state's quarterly rate. Negative means a credit. This tool does all of it for you.
Which states have a surcharge?
Indiana, Kentucky and Virginia publish Schedule-2 surcharges for certain fuels. In the loaded Q2 2026 matrix, Indiana’s $0.61 surcharge applies to propane only. The calculator applies each published fuel-specific surcharge automatically.
What do I need to use it?
Your total miles and fuel gallons per state for the quarter — from your trip sheets, ELD/GPS, and fuel receipts. Enter them above and you get a per-jurisdiction reconciliation you can print or copy.
